Karachi: Pakistan has been engulfed in violence following Benazir Bhutto's assassination on Thursday. The violence that erupted after Benazir’s unfortunate assassination continues to sweep the streets of Pakistan even on Saturday.
Many shops in a cloth market in Karachi were set on fire and with three days of bandh in Pakistan, only chemist shops have been allowed to be open. The petrol pumps and telephone lines are closed and people are finding it difficult to cope up with the situation.
Angry supporters of Benazir rioted in Karachi after her killing, firing shots at police, setting tires and cars on fire and burning a gas station. One person was killed north of Karachi in the violent aftermath of the assassination.
With the new versions of Benazir’s assassination, the people of Karachi seem to be drowned in skepticism. Pakistani government asserted on Friday that al-Qaeda was behind the assassination of Benazir, and offered the transcript from a phone tap as the proof.
President Pervez Musharraf's government also said Benazir was not killed by gunshots or shrapnel as originally claimed. Instead, it said her skull was shattered by the force of a suicide bomb blast that slammed her against a lever in her car's sunroof.
However, Benazir’s husband Asif Ali Zardari rubbished the government’s claim, blaming it for being negligent and accusing it of playing a “needless blame-game.”
Amidst the confusion around the unanswered questions on Benazir’s death, the government says that they are open to postponing elections, however, it is doubtful, whether there could be free and fair elections, even three to for months down the line.
