Patna: A shocking case of organ theft has surfaced in the Hajipur district of Patna.
A doctor allegedly removed a poor rickshawpuller's kidney, instead of removing his appendix.
The rickshawpuller, Surendra, now lies in the Intensive Care Unit of Patna Medical College battling for his life.
Doctors treating him say his condition is critical but the culprit, Dr R C Gupta, is absconding.
"He had gone to get his appendix removed, but the doctor removed the kidney instead. The doctor and two more men involved are absconding," Lallan Kumar, Surendra's brother, says.
Surendra, who earns Rs 40 to 50 a day pulling customers around on his cycle rickshaw cannot afford the costly treatment. His only hope is some support from the state government.
And, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was quick to react. He has promised that strict action will be taken against the greedy doctor.
"I have directed the DGP to take action immediately. The issue has gone too far now and I will intervene to make sure the culprit is caught," Nitish Kumar said.
Surendra's case reflects common health practices in rural areas, where poor, uneducated people are taken for a ride by greedy doctors.
It is a signal for the state government that deteriorating health services in the state need it's immediate attention.
