THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as crucial academic operations like head count for taking the number of students in schools are scheduled to take place on June 7, several crucial posts in the general education sector are remaining vacant. The headmasters, DEOs and AEOs have been directed to furnish the details of students admitted to various schools by 12 noon on that day. However, the reality is that more than 300 schools in the state do not have headmasters to oversee this activity. Even the crucial post of Additional DPI is now lying vacant.Apart from that, 40 posts of DEOs, including 27 in District Education Offices and many in the DPI Office, are remaining vacant. There are also nine posts of deputy directors lying vacant. Promotions to the vacancies should have taken place before the beginning of the academic year.In the higher secondary education sector, the procedures for inviting applications for transfer and promotion of teachers and principals have not been initiated yet.The pro-CPM Kerala State Teachers' Association (KSTA) has come out against the apathy to fill the vacancies. It has threatened an agitation if the vacancies are not filled through transfer and promotion.KSTA general secretary M Shajahan said that that the delay in transfers and postings was suspected to be part of a conspiracy to sabotage the online transfer process initiated by the previous government.Of the total 38 educational districts, 27 are functioning without DEOs. The promotion of junior teachers to senior teachers in higher secondary schools is being delayed owing to the indifference on the part of the Government, he said.He said that several activities like monitoring the progress of textbook distribution could not take place due to this apathy. This is at a time when there are complaints regarding the distribution of textbooks, he said.
