Kolkata theatre group Dolls Theatre will be performing in the city from September 17 onwards at a host of venues.
Brought to Hyderabad by the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), the theatre company is one of India’s contemporary creative groups who use non-conventional puppets to synthesise the modern and the traditional.
Formed in 1990 by Sudip Gupta, the group has propelled itself to the front-line.
Since its earliest play, Dolls Theatre has received appreciation for communicating to audiences that a puppet is more than a replica of human performer.
Travelling extensively within the country and abroad, they have participated in many governmental and non-governmental festivals around the world.
These include the prestigious International Puppet Theatre Festival, Tehran in 2000 and 2002, 6th International Puppet Theatre Festival, Israel in 2002, and 25th International Puppet Theatre Festival, Spain in 2007.
Taming of the wild, Padmagatha, Shatrang ke Khiladi, Nak Kata Raja, and Aguner Parassmoni are some of the creative geniuses of Gupta.
Dolls Theatre productions have also been broadcast by Doordarshan and used by popular media to spread social messages.
They have actively participated on platforms like Sangeet Natak Academy, (New Delhi), SPICMACAY, Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, ICCR, Paschim Banga Natya Academi among others.
The group will perform at Vidyaranya High School, Chaitanya Vidyalaya, Silver Oaks School (Bachupally), Hyderabad Public School (Ramanthapur), Keshav Memorial institute of Technology (KMIT), ICFAI Business School (Shankarpally) during their stay.

Dolls Theatre brings to the city Taming of the Wild, a performance in modern puppetry consisting of four episodes: The World Within, Floral Tribute, Movement in Wilderness and Call of the Wild.
The World Within
The luminous water dances in the sunlight.
The spectrum embraces every creature.
The fun and frolic go on.
The Mama fish and Papa fish peak and run.
The family rejoices like they have never done.
The angler is now ready and the first catch delights him.
The ‘Papa’ is well hooked.
He writhes in pain and in a flash he is in the sack.
The angler prepares for his next kill.
Floral Tribute
The lush green Tree stands proudly in the greenery of Mother Nature.
The bees flutter around it and steal honey.
Birds sing to it while the butterfly spreads its silky wings and caresses it.
One day a greedy man comes.
He pulls out his saw and gets down to work.
But when the saw breaks.
Movements in Wilderness
A spider walks leisurely and the string cries out, leaving a resonance behind.
A bird flying merrily changes the course of its flight and curiously lands on the Tabla.
It calls out for its mate and both of them share their new secret; in the next few movements a symphony is born.
The violin cannot be far behind.
Call of the Wild
On the shores of the Ocean, Nature is in ecstasy.
The sea is in ruptures.
The crane spouses dance to the rhythm of the bellowing waves.
The meek seashell holding a glittering pearl in its womb lies idly on the shore, basking in the warmth of the sun.
Amidst all this joy and tranquillity the ugly-good of the hunter appears.
The prowler goes around with the trap in search of its victim.
The Crane spouses carry on their ballet.
