New Delhi: RSS mouthpiece Organiser has alleged that the government made Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India a low-key affair to keep under wraps the huge amount of arms sale agreement signed between the two countries.
"The media completely ignored the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was on a 24-hour trip to India, with a single point agenda of signing a huge arms sale agreement. The large majority of Indians are unaware of the quantum of money involved which is running into $3 billion," the RSS mouthpiece said in the editorial of its latest issue.
It maintained that government is yet to make an official statement about the agreements signed with Russia. RSS charged that the media did not report extensively on the visit and the government diverted its attention from the issue.
"The media has not questioned the government's secrecy in this," the editorial said. Levelling allegations against the media of falling into the hands of the government, the weekly said even in the case of the Delhi gruesome gang-rape the press did not inquire into the government's lapses.
"In fact, there are rumours on the net (internet) that the government deliberately used the media to build up the crisis situation over the gruesome rape," the editorial said. It further said though the gang-rape of the 23-year-old woman took place on December 16, the outrage spilled over onto the streets only a week later.
It was "systematically stoked by the TV channels," the editorial alleged, adding that the government's behaviour in this is "definitely in the ring of suspicion". The weekly, however, said the sincerity of the protesters cannot be questioned.
The editorial also raised eyebrows about the hush-hush manner in which the gang-rape victim was cremated. "What is equally sad is the timid role played by the media which was used by the government to hide behind," it said.
