THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The raids carried out by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) carried out on Monday in the Corporation, municipal and zonal offices of the state found that employees in various offices, acted as middlemen taking bribe from the public for granting licences.The team found out that the employees of some local bodies approach shop and building owners acted as agents and granted or renewed licences after taking bribe. "It was noticed that they issue such licences without following norms,’’ Shankar Reddy, ADGP, VACB, told Express.Employees of zonal offices in Edappally (Eranakulam), Chalai, Chentitta (Thiruvanathapuram) were found with unaccounted money. The team also found that no action has been taken against building owners which do not follow building norms. It was also found that no action had been taken against those who run business in buildings which have only residential licence.The raids also revealed that applications for building construction which are more than a year old are pending at many offices and in some local bodies collecting building tax arrears have not taken place for a long time.Many offices were found to have favoured some shop-owners by not collecting tax after assessing their actual revenue.
