New Delhi: A district in Rajasthan has come together to help the sole witness of the 2008 Mumbai attack, who has been afflicted with tuberculosis and is struggling financially.

Devika Rotwal’s testimony played a key role in the conviction and subsequent hanging of Mumbai attacks accused, Ajmal Kasab. However, she and her family have been living in the city's slums, with no help in her fight against TB.

After a call was put out by a non-profit organisation, Tapovan Pranyas, residents of Shri Ganganagar banded together to provide Devika and her family with all the assistance they need.

Tapovan Pranyas's president, Mahesh Pariwal, left for Mumbai with a sum of Rs 2 Lakh for Devika and her family.

Devika made headlines after testifying in court against Kasab, while on crutches, as she had been shot during the attack.

Speaking to the media, Pariwal said he would interact with the Rotwal family to understand their needs and provide further assistance. “The Mumbai attack was a black day in our history. I salute the bravery of this girl who came to court on crutches to testify against him,” he said, before adding that Shri Ganganagar hopes to set an example for the whole country.

Devika has undergone multiple operations but has not been able to recover from TB.

The Managing Director of Shri Ganganagar's Asthana Kidney and General Hospital, Dr Sanjay Chauhan, said that the hospital would help her during recovery.

Should Devika come to Shri Ganganagar, the hospital would provide her with “computer education, a job with Rs 10,000 a month salary and a place to stay for as long as she chooses to.”
