MADURAI: The mother of a life convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has filed a petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government to release her son on parole for a month from the Madurai Central Prison, to make arrangements for his future, after release.P Rajeswari from Aruppukottai, mother of Ravi alias Ravichandran, one of the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, who is serving a life sentence, has stated in her petition that her son should be granted parole in order to register a few properties in his name.Expressing her belief that Ravi may be released soon since he had already completed 20 years of imprisonment and citing her failing health, Rajeswari stated that they needed time to make arrangements with regard to providing Ravi with a decent future, after release from prison.Ravi was granted parole on three earlier occasions between 2001 and 2003 to stay beside his father when he was critically ill and to attend his funeral. On July 19, 2010 Ravi sent a representation to the Chief Minister through the Superintendent of Central Prison of Madurai to grant him parole in order to settle a property dispute in his family. He also sent a representation on May 18, 2011, and received no response for both the petitions. Therefore, Rajeswari filed a petition at the court following which the court on July 15, 2011, directed the State government to consider the representation.Meanwhile, the government passed an order on September 26, 2011, rejecting the representation under rules 7, 21 (c) and 21 (d) of the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentence Rules, 1982. According to the order passed by the State government, Ravi’s presence outside was considered dangerous and prejudicial to public peace and tranquility. However, Rajeswari refuted the claims of the State in her petition and added that the order passed by the government did not include the recommendations of the probationary officer of prison department at Virudhunagar and the Virudhunagar District Collector, who recommended Ravi’s premature release due to his good conduct in the prisons. Therefore, she requested the court to set aside the impugned order passed by the State on September 26, 2011, and direct the government to release her son on parole for one month.Justice V Ramasubramanian before whom the petition came up posted the matter for hearing on December 8, 2011, and directed Government Pleader R Karthikeyan to take notice of the petition.
