Defending Formula One champions Red Bull have threatened to quit Formula One after Daniel Ricciardo was stripped off his podium finish in the 2014 season opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, The Telegraph has reported.
Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has said the presence of his team in F1 is not unconditional, after the third-place finish was snatched from Ricciardo as he was found to have exceeded the fuel-flow limit. The world champions have appealed against the decision.
The Telegraph has reported that Mateschitz is unhappy at the use of the word "cheating" in relation to Ricciardo's exclusion in Melbourne.
"The question is not so much about whether it makes economic sense, but more to do with the sporting value, political influence and the like," Mateschitz was quoted by Viennese newspaper Kurier. "We have had it all but from our perspective there is a clear limit to what we can accept."
The team's appeal will be heard in Paris on April 14.
"Formula One should again be what it always has been: the ultimate discipline. It is not there to set new records in fuel consumption or so you can talk at a whisper during a race and the greatest thrill is the squealing of the tyres," Mateschitz added.
