KOCHI: The DGP has announced rewards to the policemen who use high-tech gadgets to catch traffic offenders. The move was made in the wake of the reports that the majority of the police personnel use the traditional way of traffic enforcement methods even after they have been provided with adequate equipment to detect the traffic offences. According to the directive from Jacob Punnose, DGP, all officers in the state should strictly use digital technology while detecting motor vehicle offences. “Use of the latest technology will be encouraged. The SPs and Circle Inspectors will review the adoption of modern technology to detect offences and will reward sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors and civil police officers who have taken significant action through the adoption of technology. In some cases, reward rolls may be sent to IGPs and ADGPs and the state police chief also,” the directive from the DGP stated.According to police personnel traditional methods are still widely adopted. “Most motor vehicle petty cases are still detected through traditional methods like stopping several vehicles simultaneously in queue, summoning drivers with papers and detaining commuters for a long time on the road,” said some policemen.“Use of digital means should be resorted to wherever possible. Equipment like digital camera, traffic surveillance camera, mobile phone cameras, hand-held videocameras, alcometers, speed radars etc supplied to the police stations/circles should be used more often. This will not only provide proof that can be sent to offenders while asking them to remit fines but will also ensure that police do not have to enter into unnecessary arguments with vehicle drivers. The e-chalan system, which is being successfully used in Thiruvananthapuram, can be extended later to other cities also to enable payment compounding fee at banks without coming to the police station,” the DGP pointed out.
