CHENNAI:Pharmacists, who are key contributors towards improving the health of the people, are expected to use their knowledge and expertise to educate the public regarding rationale drug use, prevention of communicable diseases, methods of family planning and importance of good health, Governor K Rosaiah said here on Friday.Addressing the gathering during the National Pharmacy Week celebrations at Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Rosaiah said, “It is a career with a blend of science, healthcare, patient care, computer technology and business.”For the past 49 years, the National Pharmacy Week is being celebrated every year in India, in the third week of November. The purpose of the National Pharmacy Week is to bring awareness amongst the people about the role of the pharmacist in healthcare and to promote the pharmacy profession.In India, healthcare infrastructure has made rapid progress. Yet we have to improvise its quality, enhance its technology and provide healthcare system on a par with international standards, Rosaiah said.“India has a largest healthcare infrastructure and today, the total value of the sector translates to about 6 per cent of GDP,” he added.The importance of commemorating National Pharmacy Week lies in recognising the value of pharmacists in ensuring safe and effective use of medicines and the vital role they play as professionals in the healthcare team, Rosaiah further added.
