CHENNAI: With a view to checking rain water from flowing into the sea and storing water received from Krishna River for the residents of Chennai and its surrounding areas, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday ordered the creation of a new reservoir in Tiruvallur district by merging Kannankottai and Thervoykandigai lakes at an expenditure of Rs 330 crore. An extent of 1,252.47 acres of land, including 560.05 acres of government land, will be acquired for the project and the new reservoir will be in place within two years. The new reservoir will have a storage capacity of thousand million cubic feet of water if the reservoir gets filled twice a year. The reservoir is located 5 km away from Palavakkam village and 14 km from Oothukottai. An earthern dam would be built along the Kandaleru-Poondi Canal, stretching up to the 6,800 metre point. Further, another canal will be laid from the 900 metre point to the 7,500 metre point on the same section. This canal would pass through Thamaraikuppam, Chengi, Agaram, Pallikuppam village and Pallikuppam reserve forest and would carry the water received from the catchment areas in Andhra Pradesh. Besides, regulators would be installed at 4,125 metre of the longitudinal section.Due to excessive use, groundwater table was coming down day by day and to increase this groundwater table, a scheme was being implemented in Tamil Nadu for replenishment of groundwater in an artificial manner. Under this scheme, small ponds and check dams were being created across rivers, tributaries and streams to increase the groundwater table artificially. The CM has earmarked Rs 5.33 crore for implementing this scheme in the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Tiruvannamalai. Apart from the se, the CM has also allocated `6.16 crore for laying sub-surface checkwalls and other groundwater recharge structures in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Thanjavur districts.
