MARRIGUDA (NALGONDA DIST): The rural children are having a hard time reaching schools on time and the awry timings of RTC buses seem to be the ones to blame. Many children have to travel at least 5 to 10 km to either mandal headquarter or a nearby village to reach their schools. Some people also send their children to private schools which are located about 10-15 km away. As it costs around `600 per month to travel in autos or school buses, most parents send their children on RTC buses as the government provides free bus passes for up to class VIII and Rs90 per month passes for children in higher classes. However, with buses not running to schedule and many times being cancelled without notice, many students are missing their first classes. For instance, children of Sarampet village in Marriguda mandal missed their first class on Wednesday as a bus was cancelled on the this route. Most of the children at the village go to the Sivannagudem government school and some also go to the English medium school located at the mandal headquarter. J Mamatha, a class VIII student said they were late by an hour as an RTC bus on the route was cancelled. She added that buses on their route often run behind schedule, making it hard for them to reach on time. Her parents cannot afford sending her by an auto as it costs `15 per day. Another student S Vamshi, who studies in class VI at the English medium school said he too depended on RTC bus to reach school. “My mother wanted me to attend a English medium school. But she can’t afford to spend on the school bus fare,” he said. He added that missing the first class was a routine affair, as the RTC buses were mostly running behind time.
