New Delhi: Saudi police have reportedly thwarted the plans of a terror group to carry out attacks during the Hajj pilgrimage.
Saudi television channel al-Arabiya reports that police arrested members of an al-Qaeda-linked group a few days ago.
The news was seemingly kept under wraps, perhaps to avoid panic among pilgrims.
More than 2.5 million pilgrims had gathered at Mecca for the pilgrimage which ended on Thursday.
The number of alleged terrorists arrested is still unknown. The arrests were made from different parts of the country.
This not the first time that Hajj pilgrims have been targeted by terrorists.
In December 1979, 151 people were killed and 560 wounded after Saudi security forces stormed the Grand Mosque in Mecca to rescue pilgrims held hostage by militants.
