BANGALOREEven while one is yet to come to a conclusion whether private tuition is really helpful or not, the Department of Pre University (PU) Board is conducting a survey on private coaching centres during Common Entrance Test (CET) counselling for engineering and medical admissions. The department is collecting information about private tuition from the students who attend the ongoing CET counselling for admissions to professional courses. The counselling for medical and dental which already begun has questions related to private coaching classes. Candidates are asked to answer questions related to tuition, for example, did they attended coaching classes for their second PUC as well as CET? Which particular subject did they need extra coaching for? They are also asked to provide details about the private coaching institutes, said a senior official from the department.Once it is done, the date will be sent to the state government for further action. What do rules say?According to Karnataka Pre-University Education (Academic, Registration, Administration and Grandin- aid) Rules 2006, under the code of conduct for employees of aided and unaided PU colleges, no employee shall conduct private tuition. If he or she violates the rules, they shall be liable for disciplinary action. However, it allows unemployed graduates to take classes after gaining the permission of the department by paying `25,000 as a registration fee.Bending of rulesThough there are rules, teachers working in private, aided and unaided colleges are taking private tuition. Also, there are many private tuition centres that are running without the permission of the department.According to official sources, there are teachers who come to colleges just to mark their attendance and conduct private tuition outside. “This is a huge business,” said a source on the condition of anonymity.Offi cial speakDirector to the Department Rashmi V Mahesh said that she is reviewing the existing rules on tuition. She said that the ultimate idea is to see more students in the campus.“One should not be there just for the sake of attendance of 75 per cent. Feedback about coaching classes is also a part of the questionnaire because we need to get honest feedback from the end users,” she said. What do students want?Apoorva C, who completed her second PU said though she had lecturers in chemistry and mathematics, many of them used to skip lessons.“At the coaching centre, our teachers used prepare us for the CET too. It’s better to take private tuition in second PU — especially those who study science and want to pursue engineering or medicine,” Apoorva explains.Shreyas Jadav, who is doing his degree says that he studied commerce at the Pre University level. “I used to go for accountancy tuition. Not because the subject was tough, but it needed more practice. At my college, the faculty was not apt to make us practice,’’ he noted.Parents speakCentral government employee, Gangadhar’s son Adarsh goes to a private college where college fees are not heavy.“Teaching is not that good too. That is the reason why I made my son go for private tuition. He has scored good rank. I am sure he would not have got it without tuition,” he added.Centre standBASE prepares students to take on highly competitive exams. Director of BASE, Vallish Heruru Vallish said that for any competitive exam, the syllabus that the second PU follows is not enough.“One needs to be more analytical during competitive exams. We train students for such exams, at the same time prepare them to take board exams,” he said.
