Chandigarh: It is the great Indian scam again. This time the victims could be the people of Haryana yet again. Last year the river Yamuna flooded causing massive damage, especially at the Hathnikund Barrage. The state government has spent Rs 68 crores on repairs but an inspection team has found the new embankment is mostly sand, and very little cement.
Villager Aslam says, “Some have stones, some have sand, there is only cement on the outside for show but inside there is nothing.”
Even the inspection team formed by the state and the centre had to fight their way through the Yamuna nagar officials to be able to gather samples from the embankments. Sampling drillers found there was just coarse sand and dust inside the embankments that were supposed to be made of high grade cement and concrete.
Vigilance officer Rajesh Narang, said, “There should be cement, aggregate and sand, the cement and aggregate is less and more fine material. This contract was in the range of Rs 40-50 crores.”
The sampling team says the construction is so poor that the even one flooding incident will be enough to break through the embankments.
Village headman, Tajewala Yashpal Singh says, “Our demand is that the work should happen as fast as possible so that our village is saved.”
With the monsoons already here, the villagers around the barrage will be hoping their luck holds, since the embankment certainly might not.
