THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid protests against the wrong choice of place, the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) is going ahead with the construction of temporary sheds for traders on the road in front of the Central theatre. TRIDA has invited tenders for the construction of shops on the narrow road. Temporary sheds are being constructed for traders who need to be rehabilitated as part of the works of the Thakaraparambu flyover. There have been protests from various quarters against the choice of the place since the construction will block vehicular traffic along the road, used by a large number of vehicles plying to Chalai, Karamana and Killippalam areas. Adding to the woes, vehicular traffic will not be allowed along the Power House Road once the work on the Thakaraparambu flyover begins. This will create traffic blocks at Overbridge and Thampanoor. The work of Thakaraparambu flyover might take at least two years.Permanent rehabilitation for the traders is planned on the compound of the Government Central School, Attakulangara, where TRIDA is planning to construct a commercial complex and bus stand. Representatives of traders had met Transport Minister V S Sivakumar seeking a change of location. The traders had suggested the land belonging to the Transport Department near the Putharikandam Maidan as the ideal location for construction of temporary sheds. However, the Minister rejected the suggestion. TRIDA and Kerala Road Fund Board are planning to construct three-metre-wide sheds, which would totally block vehicular traffic on the narrow road in front of the Central theatre. City traffic will witness utter chaos once the work on the Thakaraparambu flyover begins.
