Thoongampara is a local tourist spot in Kattakada town of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. The area is now included in an eco-tourism spot in the district. Thoongampara of Kattakkada Gram Panchayat is being included in the rural tourism project and is being converted into a tourism spot. It is located on the Neyyattinkara road, 2 km from Kattakada. The place has a large hanging rock known as Hanganpara and later Thoongampara. Tourists love to watch the sky from the top of the rocks. The famous Irayankot Mahadeva Temple and St Theresa Shrine are also popular tourist attractions in Thoongampara.
The tourism department has started the first phase to develop Thoongampara as a tourism spot in the area by including adventure activities. The government has invested Rs 99.99 lakh for the same. Thoongampara is spread over an area of more than one acre. Minister Mohammad Riaz inaugurated the eco-tourism project at Thoongampara.
Another special feature of Thoongampara is the mild climate along with the scenic view above the rocks. The top of the cliff is about 200 feet high and can accommodate a large number of visitors. In the past, farmers used to dry dead rice in Thoongampara. Later it became a place of entertainment for groups of children. Locals of the place also protect this future eco-tourist spot by chasing away the locals who came to break the rocks.
The project is being implemented to bring together various sectors along with tourism, including job opportunities for residents. The first phase will include steps to climb the rock, toilets, huts, retaining wall, signage, open stage, rainwater harvesting, water supply, electrification, stairs and landscaping.
Now, Thoongampara is expected to garner more visitors once it becomes an eco-tourism spot. The scenic view from above the rocks, the setting sun, and the distant city scenes will be a new experience for every tourist.
