CHENNAI: DMDK president and leader of Opposition Vijayakanth urged the State Government to prevail upon the Centre to clearly define the poverty line to facilitate identification of beneficiaries.Winding up the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Vijayakanth welcomed the poverty eradication programmes promised by the AIADMK regime and said his party’s goal was to ensure there were no poor people in the entire State.Stating that both the Union Government and the Planning Commission had not properly determined the yardstick for fixing the poverty line, he said: “Even the Supreme Court has pointed out this lacunae. The Centre has, however, not given a proper reply.” End graftStressing that people had to grease the palms of government employees for things like getting certificates from the Revenue department and lodging police complaints, Vijaykanth wanted the new dispensation to convincingly end graft. He pointed out that corruption was rampant in the previous regime. “Realising this, the present government’s step to credit money in the account of the beneficiaries welcome.”He praised the AIADMK for taking steps to arrest anti-socials and welcomed the probe into the building of the new Secretariat.
