Lucknow: Claiming to have solved the Varanasi blasts case, the UP police on Wednesday arrested six "Pakistan-trained" militants, including the key conspirator, from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
The six militants including "main conspirator" Wali Ullah, were arrested from Lucknow, Allahabad, Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and one place in West Bengal, police sources said.
"This is a Bangladesh based organisation called Harkat-ul-jehadi-islami. Its associated with Pak based Jaish-e-Mohammed. Its chief commander is Asad from Bangladesh. Waliullah gets instructions from Asad and then people are send to Bangladesh for training. From bangladesh, they are send to Pakistan and then to India," Inspector General, Special Task Force, Jagpal Yadav, says.
The sources said those arrested were trained by the JeM outfit.
The blasts in the temple town, that claimed 20 lives, were allegedly planned by Harkat-ul-Jehadi-Islamia and Jaish-e-Mohammad – Pak-based militant outfits.
However, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah Rajesh Kumar Rai said that except the Bangladeshi, the five others have no connection with the blasts.
One AK-56 rifle, 12 Chinese made grenades, some RDX and some detonators have been recovered from the arrested men.
This is the first such attack jointly carried out by two militant outfits operating outside the country.
On March 7, two explosions occurred in quick succession at the Sankatmochan shrine and the cantonment railway station, killing 20 people and injuring over 50
The worst hit was the railway station where 14 people were killed and 30 injured.
The other blast at the famous Sankatmochan temple occurred when it was teeming with devotees, killing six persons and injuring 25 others.
