WikiLeaks: Ban made 'My Name Is Khan' a hit
A WikiLeaks cable suggests that the Shiv Sena ban was one of the reasons behind the success of 'My name is Khan'.

A recently disclosed WikiLeaks cable suggests that the ban put by Shiv Sena was one of the prime reasons behind the mega success of last year's blockbuster 'My Name is Khan'.

Featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the lead pair, MNIK had faced the wrath of Shiv Sena, a Maharashtra based political party.

The cable explains that the Shiv Sena had threatened to ban screenings of 'My Name is Khan', because Shah Rukh Khan had publicly lamented the absence of Pakistani cricket players in India's professional league for the coming season.

The Shiv Sena cadre went on to protest in front of Shah Rukh Khan's home and burnt posters of MNIK throughout Mumbai.

Many theater owners refrained from screening MNIK on its Friday release. Later, they showcased the film amidst tight security arrangements on Saturday.

The protests and objections made by Shiv Sena generated a lot of curiosity about the film, and the film went on to become one of the most successful Hindi films of all times, especially overseas.

The cable further says that Shah Rukh Khan, who also owns the KolKata Knight Riders, a team in IPL, did not go for any Pakistani player during the bidding process for international players.
