Women SHG members make Marina clean

CHENNAI: About 5,000 members of different women self-help groups (SHGs) cleaned the Marina Beach recently to mark the Women’s Day.Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy along with the District Collector Jayanthi launched the mega drive to clean Marina Beach, starting from Labour Statue up to Light House at Nochikuppam.The drive that stretched about four hours from 8am saw the women cleaning the areas allocated to them in five groups.To collect trash from sand, Mayor Duraisamy distributed a bag and a pair of glows to each member. To move out the collected garbage, the civic body had stationed five of its compactor lorries along the stretch.According to a release, the members were able to collect about 2,500 kgs of trash from the whole beach area.Among others, Corporation Commissioner PWC Davidar and Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women Limited’s managing director P Amudha also participated in the drive to motivate the SHG members.
