This generation has seen an array of filmmakers, from the likes of Anurag Kashyap who believe in presenting the dark realities of society to that of Rohit Shetty who work on giving 'paisa vasool' entertainment to the viewers. Imtiaz Ali belongs to the third kind of group, who believes in presenting dreams and surreal experiences through real and relatable characters. The way Ali questions and showcases life complexities through his films is ingenious. There is always a factor in his stories that you take back with you and ponder upon for a very long time.
Born and brought up in a small town, Imtiaz Ali grew up in an environment of film lovers. As the director made his way into college life, he started doing theatre. His passion and skills brought him to Mumbai and the visionary inside him compelled him to make films that circled around finding different meanings of life. As the director turns 45, we bring to you a list of his best works till date:
Highway
Based on finding one's true belongingness and leaving behind the clutches of the society, 'Highway' was the story of Veera. An upper class girl having her share of dark past is kidnapped by a goon who has his share of personal demons to deal with. How these two broken souls find solace in each other has been told beautifully by Ali. Who could handle the complexities of Stockholm syndrome better than Imtiaz Ali!
Rockstar
A talented singer tries to find his inspiration and deliberately gets his heart broken by a girl who doesn't belong to his society. In order to embrace himself and his talent, he loses himself in the love of a girl and thus turns into a broken man. 'Rockstar' is the story of a rebel and has emotional depth only a broken soul could connect with.
Tamasha
Another stellar by Ali and Ranbir Kapoor is last year's film 'Tamasha'. A film for all those 'misfits' who give in their everything to fit into the mould of the society. 'Tamasha' is a story of Ved who actually lives in a world of stories and fantasies, however reality hits him hard and forces him to live a dual life. Very subtly, the film hit the right chord among a generation which is still finding it's 'own, independent' way of living their dreams without compromising the comfort of life.
Socha Na Tha
Imtiaz Ali's first film 'Socha Na Tha' was like a fresh breath of air. Dealing with the concept of arranged marriage, the film showed the confusion of youngsters who want to go with their own choices and not settle with the rules set by the society and parents. Refreshing storyline, amazing concept and keeping alive the theme of 'do what your heart says', Imtiaz made it a point to get recognised right with his very first film.
Love Aaj Kal
Another out of the box film, 'Love Aaj Kal' dealt with the concept of break up and moving on. How today's generation is not very different from their parent's generation was depicted brilliantly by Ali. He showed no matter how 'fast paced' and 'relax' Gen Y becomes about the concept of love, even they won't let go when they find their 'perfect one'. Another film based on confusion and finding what really matters, the concept became Imtiaz Ali's forte after this film.
Either it's about finding love, inspiration or oneself, Ali's works have always been about the soul and dreams of the protagonist. At a time when Bollywood is striking a balance between commercial and art films, Ali has created his own niche by being a filmmaker of soul. Wishing the life visionary a very happy birthday.
