Any such action against the film saddens me, hope it comes out looking better when re-released: Arif Zakaria on producer withdrawing 'Nanak Shah Fakir' from theatres
Arif Zakaria, who plays Bhai Mardana, shares his perspective exclusively with IBNLive.com after the film was withdrawn from theaters worldwide.

New Delhi: Even though the movie lovers have been lauding 'Nanak Shah Fakir', producer Harvinder Singh Sikka decided to withdraw the film from theatres across the world following wide-spread resentment among the Sikh masses over its content.

"As per the directions of holy Akal Takht (the highest temporal seat of Sikhs), I have decided to withdraw the movie 'Nanak Shah Fakir' from all the theatres worldwide forthwith," he had said in a statement.

Arif Zakaria, who played Bhai Mardana, Guru Nanakji's disciple and friend in the film, speaks exclusively to IBNLive.com about his character's religious undertones. Read on to know what he shared with us:

Since we get to know Guru Nanakji through the role of 'Mardana', how much did the character change you personally?

Beneath all the historical and religious connotations associated with Bhai Mardana, it was a great artistic journey with the character. Each such journey always changes you for the better and matures you as a performer. I wish I could be as selfless as Bhai Mardana, but I can't in reality.

While researching for the role, did you come across any interesting facts and stories about your character?

The research provided to me gave a funny glimpse into Mardana's character because he always complained of being hungry. In fact, he would always fight with Nanakji about food. This was the warmth of the relationship they shared.

The film's producer has decided to withdraw the film as he can't afford to go against the directives of the top religious head Gurbachan Singh. Your reaction...

Any such action against the film does sadden me. A film is a costly, collaborative team effort. The message we are depicting is so universal and apt. I wish the concerned party saw the impact and relevance of the film. I hope it comes out looking better when it is re-released.

Can the support of popular production houses and exhibitors help independent filmmakers carve a niche for themselves in the showbiz industry?

Yes, indeed. The backing of big production houses and filmmakers will invariably help different cinema. In fact I support the mandatory Marathi film screening by Multiplexes. This ambit should also include children's film by Children's film society and NFDC films as both these agencies have zero distribution channels. We must encourage all types of cinema.

You've worked with several popular names like Deepa Mehta and Shyam Benegal. How similar and different are the two?

Each director I've worked is a sum of his/her personality and vision. I'm proud and happy to have had this opportunity of working with interesting minds.

What's your reaction?
