Two small-budget films, The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story were released in 2022 and 2023, respectively, and both proved to be superhits at the box office. Surprisingly, though, a recent film with a similar hue, featuring a top actress and a substantial budget, has tanked at the box office.
Tejas, featuring Kangana Ranaut in the lead, was released on October 27, 2023. The film is failing badly at the box office, with reports indicating that the audience is simply not showing up at theatres. Despite its substantial budget and the leading actress, Tejas failed to make a mark upon release. Directed by Sarwesh Mewara and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the film’s lacklustre performance has left the industry and fans baffled.
The Kashmir Files, released in 2022, revolves around the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits. Despite its low budget and a cast of moderately known actors, the film emerged as a resounding box office success. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film grossed a whopping Rs 340.92 crore at the box office. The makers, though, were accused of making a propaganda film, which misrepresented facts.
The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen and released in the following year, also achieved exceptional box office success. The film managed to gross more than Rs 300 crore at the box office, all while working with a budget of Rs 15 to Rs 20 crore. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani, this film currently ranks as the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year.
It’s worth noting that upon its release, the film found itself entangled in controversies, particularly in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where it was accused of spreading false information and defaming the regions. Nevertheless, it overcome these challenges to make cinematic history.
