In the Run-Up to Mumbai IOC Session, a Look Back at the Delhi Session 40 Years Ago
The spotlight at the 1983 meet was on Los Angeles, the host of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games as well as on the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo the same year

The 141st IOC Session will be held in Mumbai from October 15 to 17, returning to the country after 40 years. Usually, important decisions regarding host cities for upcoming events, inclusion or exclusion of sports and federations, and changes in the Olympic Charter are made at the IOC Sessions.

In 1983, the 86th IOC Session was held in national capital New Delhi from March 26 to 28. The Opening Ceremony held on March 25 was attended by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. The spotlight at the meet was on Los Angeles, the host of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games as well as on the Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo the same year.

At the time, the IOC member in India was Ashwini Kumar, who was elected as Vice-President during the session in New Delhi.

Since 2016, Nita Ambani has been the IOC member in India. She is the first female IOC member in India and a big supporter of sports. Nita Ambani has been at the forefront of championing the country’s potential into becoming a sports powerhouse and shining the spotlight on India. Elected to the IOC in 2016, she is the first Indian woman to become a member of the IOC and has since demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to strengthening India’s contribution to the Olympic Movement.

Bringing new perspective and skills to the organization, Mrs Ambani has been appointed to several IOC commissions since her election as an IOC member: Olympic Channel (2017-present), Olympic Education (2017-present), and Culture and Olympic Heritage (2020-present).

India will be hosting this prestigious meeting for the first time since 1983, for what is set to be the start of a new era of engagement between the country’s youthful population and the Olympic Movement.

Mumbai was elected as the host of the 141st IOC Session by an overwhelming 99 percent of the votes from the delegates participating in the process, with 75 members endorsing its candidature to host the IOC Session in 2023.

Those in attendance this time around will be IOC President Thomas Bach as well as other IOC Members, including two-time Olympic 1500m champion and World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, seven-time Olympic swimming medallist and Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission Dakar Youth Olympics 2026 Kirsty Coventry, Prince Souverain Albert II of Monaco, two-time Olympic pole vault gold medallist Yelena Isenbaeva, two-time Olympic 10000m silver medallist and National Olympic Committee of Kenya President Paul Tergat, Olympic pole vault gold medallist Sergey Bubka, Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra, to name a few.
