The 2024 edition of the Irani Cup match between Ranji Trophy winners Mumbai and Rest of India is likely to take place at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. According to a report in the Times of India on Tuesday (September 10), the match has been relocated from Mumbai to Lucknow due to the extended monsoon in Mumbai and will be played from October 1 to 5.
The 30-time champion Rest of India team has won the last three editions of the Irani Cup. Mumbai is the second-most successful team in the tournament’s history with 14 titles.
Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai won the 2023-24 edition of the Ranji Trophy by getting the better of Vidarbha by 169 runs in the final played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from March 10 to 14.
Shardul Thakur top-scored for the domestic giants in the first inning by making 75 runs from 69 runs. In the second inning, Musheer Khan, who is the younger brother of Sarfaraz Khan, scored 136 runs, and Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Shams Mulani made contributions of 73, 95, and 50 runs, respectively.
Many top Indian players who are currently playing in the Duleep Trophy 2024 are likely to be part of the Rest of India team, whereas India D captain Iyer and India B batter Musheer are expected to represent Mumbai.
Iyer, who last played a Test match for India in Vizag (February 2024) against England, scored a fifty for India D in the second inning of the Duleep Trophy 2024 match played against India C in Anantapur last week. But he failed to help his side from losing the match by four wickets.
On the other hand, Musheer was the top scorer for India B in the match played against India A at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The 19-year-old right-handed batter, who also impressed with his performances in the U-19 World Cup 2024, is all set to be part of India A team that will travel to Australia later this year for the three four-day Test matches Down Under.
