As India ushers into a new year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the final episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ for this year on Sunday in which he heaped praise on Rohit Sharma & Co for their commendable run in the ICC World Cup 2023. Team India was the only unbeaten side in the group stage of the tournament. They also thrashed New Zealand in the semi-final, registering their most number of consecutive wins in a single edition of the showpiece event. But their campaign was derailed in the final when they suffered a batting collapse against the Aussies and lost the second World Cup final to them.
On Sunday, PM Modi recalled the journey of Team India in the ODI World Cup and said the team won the hearts of everyone with their performance.
“Indian players won everyone’s heart with their performance in the Cricket World Cup. The victory of our women’s cricket team in the Under-19 T20 World Cup is very inspiring. The achievements of players in many other sports added to the glory of the country,” said PM Modi on Sunday.
Despite the heart-wrenching defeat, the Men in Blue ticked several boxes. The pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah (20 wickets in 11 matches) and Mohammed Shami (24 wickets in seven matches, highest-wicket-taker) was unplayable and were complimented by spinners Ravindra Jadeja (16 wickets in 11 matches) and Kuldeep Yadav (15 wickets in 11 matches).
One of the major highlights of the tournament was Virat Kohli who scored 3 hundreds and 6 fifties and most importantly, went past Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons.
PM Modi also recalled India’s achievement in sports throughout this year and lavished praise on athletes who participated in the Asian Games and Asian Para Games, encouraging athletes to do well in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“This year our athletes also performed marvellously in sports. Our players won 107 medals in the Asian Games and 111 medals in the Asian Para Games. The achievements of players in many other sports added to the glory of the country,” the Prime Minister said.
“Now Paris Olympics will be held in 2024, for which the whole country is encouraging her players,” he added.
India finished their Asian Games campaign at Hangzhou in China with a record haul of 107 medals – 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze.
