New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress for a making a hue and cry about EVMs before elections, but suggested that that the party seems agreeable every time the results turn in their favour.
During the just concluded Assembly polls too, the Congress alleged malfunctioning in voting machines, ballot units and VVPATs.
"Before every election they begin to make noise about EVMs, trying to create an atmosphere of doubt. However, after elections, if the Congress performs well they seem to accept results that have come out of the same EVM," PM Modi told BJP karyakartas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The PM was interacting with BJP workers via videoconferencing. He urged the workers to spread information and awareness about Congress' "undemocratic behaviour" in order to strengthen democracy.
"The perfect answer to undemocratic behavior of the Congress is to strengthen democracy. Information and awareness are important for democracy. We should keep people informed about the Congress and its dangerous games," said PM Modi.
The PM further accused the Congress of "humiliating" the public institutions of the country.
"They've humiliated the Army, CAG and every institution important to our democracy. Recently they questioned an SC verdict just because they didn't like the decision. Earlier, just because they couldn't threaten the court into doing what they wanted they tried to even impeach the CJI," said the Prime Minister.
Before the Madhya Pradesh Assembly results were announced, the Congress said it will get experts to conduct a forensic examination of the voting pattern in the state's Vindhya region, from where it won just six out of 30 seats, as it had "suspicion" on the EVMs deployed there.
During the polling as some EVMs developed snags, the Congress demanded that re-polling should be ordered where technical delays stalled polling for upto three hours as it denied several voters the chance to cast their vote.
However, the Congress has been completely quiet about EVMs and its alleged malfunctioning post the polls. It emerged the largest party and went on to form the government with support from the SP and the BSP.
Likening the Congress and opposition parties to a student blaming the school, teacher and examiner if his results were not favourable, PM Modi said, "The same thing is happening in the case of our opposition, too. This has to be explained to the people."
Hailing people as the greatest force protecting democracy, the prime minister said the last time Congress tried to threaten it, people threw them out of power. He was apparently hinting at imposition of Emergency by Indira Gandhi in 1975.
"Reach out to people and tell them the Congress' DNA is still the same. Just because Emergency saw a big fightback from the people now they have become more cunning in their tactics. But yet again India will not excuse the Congress for playing with democracy."
Modi asked party workers to increase their public outreach by creating awareness about his "hardworking" government's welfare schemes.
"From housing to health care, from sanitation to skills, there are schemes for every section of society," he said, and asked booth level workers to reach out to people about those measures.
He said, if people were confused or misinformed, BJP workers could seek help of the Narendra Modi app to arm themselves with data and information.
