A Congress leader in Andhra Pradesh has built a temple for party president Sonia Gandhi, according to various media reports. The accompanying pictures show Gandhi as the officiating deity in the temple built by Shankar Rao, a legislator from Andhra Pradesh.
Dismissing accusations of sycophancy, Rao told reporters that the temple for Gandhi is his way of showing gratitude to the Congress President for creating a separate Telangana state.
Rao told the BBC that he was building the temple in Mahbubnagar district to "thank" Gandhi for her party's decision in July to split Andhra Pradesh and create Telangana.
Gandhi's idol holds a sapling in one hand and a bowl of fruit in the other, the BBC reported. "I hope this temple will thrive and people will come here to offer prayers to Mrs Gandhi," Rao said. "She is Telangana Talli (Mother goddess of Telangana)", Rao, who worships Gandhi's idol, said.
