Wimbledon 2024: Sumit Nagal Crashes Out In First Round After Maiden Main Draw Apperance
Nagal fought hard to keep his Wimbledon dreams alive but ultimately lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to the Serbian in a clash that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes.

India No.1 Sumit Nagal’s trip to the main draw of Wimbledon was cut short at its earliest, as the Indian fell to Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Men’s Singles event on Monday.

Nagal fought hard to keep his Wimbledon dreams alive but ultimately lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to the Serbian in a clash that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes.

The last Indian to play a Wimbledon singles main draw match was Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019. So, after coming into this tie as a heavy underdog, Nagal was bidding to become the first Indian tennis player in the men’s singles arena to win a round at Wimbledon.

Desperation was on display, but not quality as the Indian was put down with ease in the first set. An inspired Nagal took him on the counter, pushing back to reclaim the next set in some fine fashion.

But, his resolve would not be enough to keep him going, as the Serbian skillfully put away Nagal in the next two consecutive sets to wrap up the endeavour and send the Indian packing.

It was merely an example of being outmatched on skill and experience, as Nagal faltered with plenty of unforced errors to make the job for his Serbian opponent simpler, whilst Kecmanovic remained clinical to utilise all the openings he was provided with.

This was Nagal’s first outing in the prestigious Wimbledon main draw. And while the grass court surface might not be his strongest, Nagal’s overall performance this year has been impressive.

Currently ranked 73rd, he’s set to jump seven positions to a career-high 66th in the upcoming rankings update, and will only solidify his spot at the highest-ranked Indian player with even more conviction.

Although he has bid adieu to the Singles event, not all hopes and Wimbledon dreams are lost for Nagal, as he is still in contention at the Men’s Doubles event, where he will compete with the likes of partner Dusan Lajovic to take his chances at Wimbledon glory once again.
