A 29-year-old woman from China has become an internet sensation after several people told her that her face indicates a personality that could help her future spouse become wealthy and successful. Clips showing the woman at a dinner table have gone viral on social media in mainland China in recent days, with a swarm of people commenting that she possesses a Wang Fu Xiang, or “a face that brings good luck to her husband”.

The 29-year-old woman, from Henan Province in central China, shared the video on her Douyin handle @Huaxianpengyuyan in January. The tradition that certain female facial features can bestow good luck dates back to feudal times in China. While the notion of a “lucky face” is often considered mere superstition in modern times, it still has its believers. On social media site Xiaohongshu, the hashtag #wangfuxiang has attracted over 800,000 views.

The most desirable features include a round face with a broad forehead and round chin, which is believed to indicate that the woman is kindhearted and able to help her man forge friendships.

The nose is of great importance in defining a lucky face, with a preference for a round tip and a long, straight bridge. Another crucial aspect is that the lower lip is slightly fuller than the upper, a trait believed to “hold the good fortune.” Proponents of Chinese face reading also consider soft hair and bright eyes vital for a lucky face.

Guo Jingjing, a celebrated Chinese springboard diver and four-time Olympic gold medalist who married Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, grandson of Hong Kong business magnate Henry Fok Ying-tung, in 2012, is often highlighted as a prime example of Wang Fu Xiang. The internet was filled with admiration for the woman in the video, proclaiming that they had never seen such a typical lucky face. “What an ideal image for a woman,” one man commented on Douyin.

Another person fantasised, “I’m already imagining spending the rest of my life with her.” In recent years, online dating has become a preferred method among China’s youth for finding a lifelong companion and possessing a lucky face is seen as a blessing by matchmakers. Still, there is no proven link between a lucky face and a higher bride price, which is traditionally paid by men in China to the woman’s family as part of the engagement process.
