At Ghana Funeral, Woman Shocked To See People Dancing

The passing of a loved one is a deeply sorrowful event and during such times, people often come together to attend the funeral and bid farewell to the departed soul with family. While most are familiar with the sombre atmosphere typically associated with funerals, it isn’t the same everywhere. A girl was surprised when she attended her husband’s grandmother’s funeral, where instead of weeping or mourning, people were dancing and laughing on the dance floor.

The video was posted on the social media platform, Instagram by the account holder named Hilary J. Abban (@hilaryabban). The woman mentioned that her husband is from Ghana and this was her first time attending a Ghanaian funeral with her husband, which was of his grandmother. She explained that people celebrated by dancing while paying tribute to the deceased.

In the viral video, you can see people dancing. Many of them joined the dance while some were seen seated nearby. Most of the people were seen holding a cloth resembling a handkerchief, which they waved while matching their steps. Hilary was also seen dancing with the crowd. She wrote in her caption, “You pay your respects to the family that sit at a head table and at one point a king of a village did a special dance for my father-in-law as a sign of respect. His dance was my favourite part all night.”

The video went viral soon after it was posted garnering more than 9 lakh views. Over 28 thousand users also liked the post. Millions of users also shared their reactions. One user commented, “We Ghanaians celebrate the person’s life! I saw someone in the comments ask about the colour of the cloth. Every colour has a specific meaning, and so do the symbols on it. Different family members in different clothes show different meanings. Everything we do has a meaning” while another user wrote, “Wow! I love that it’s a celebration of life! Everyone looks legitimately happy.”
