A disturbing incident at a government-affiliated institution in Hubei, China is causing widespread outrage on social media. The incident is about a coworker who tried to poison a pregnant colleague to stop her from taking maternity leave.
The incident circulated online as an employee in central Hubei province attempted to tamper with her coworker’s drink, Cover News reported. This video highlights how some people might do extreme things when they experience a lot of pressure at work.
The Hydrology and Water Resources Investigation Bureau in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province, where she works, is a government-affiliated institution. These institutions reign supreme because of their highly selective recruitment process. To get hired in such organisations, candidates must pass demanding exams and interviews. They are often referred to as “iron rice bowls” due to the job security and stability they offer.
In a video, a woman in a black vest walks up to her colleague’s desk. She opens a small bottle and pours some powder into the drink on the desk. Then, she leaves hurriedly.
Messages from WeChat revealed that the victim became aware of the incident when she noticed an unusual taste in her water. At first, she suspected there might be a problem with the office water. To be safe, she started drinking boiled bottled water. But even then, she still noticed the strange taste.
After recalling a friend’s joke about someone tampering with her drink, the victim took action. She used her iPad to record her desk and anyone who came nearby. This decision ended up helping catch her colleague.
The colleague poisoned the pregnant woman because she didn’t want her to go on maternity leave. She thought she wouldn’t be able to handle the extra work by herself. The victim has reported the incident to the police, and authorities are investigating the matter.
Officials from the Hydrology and Water Resources Investigation Bureau on March 18 reported they were treating the incident with extreme caution and were waiting for the results of the police investigation before taking action. A lawyer informed National Business Daily that if the woman intended to harm, it could be seen as a crime of injury, regardless of the substance’s toxicity or causing physical harm.
