A distressed boy in China fled his home, donned in pyjamas and went on a train journey to a different city in search of his mother following a dispute with his father over his academic performance. The incident, reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), unfolded at a railway station in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, Eastern China, where police officers spotted the upset young boy disembarking from the train in his blue nightwear on the evening of February 18.
Initially evasive during questioning, the boy eventually disclosed that he was headed to Lishui in Zhejiang province to reunite with his mother, who was employed there. Transported to the local police station for further inquiry, the boy’s behaviour raised suspicions among officers, particularly Officer Liu Yunchao, who noted his reluctance to provide details about his family and claimed to have become separated from his parents on the train journey.
Despite initial reluctance, the boy eventually confessed to travelling alone. Identified as Zhou, he revealed attending a prestigious secondary school in another city. He shared his motivation for the impromptu journey: a disagreement with his father over the stringent academic standards imposed upon him. Despite consistently achieving top marks, his father unjustly scolded the boy.
Upon initial contact, the father expressed anger and refused to retrieve his son, opting instead to impart a lesson. However, after discussions with authorities, he promptly made his way to the police station. Officer Liu emphasised the paramount importance of personal safety, highlighting the potential risks the boy faced by venturing alone. He reasoned with the father, stressing that academic success paled compared to ensuring the boy’s well-being.
The resolution saw the father acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the necessity of prioritising his son’s safety over academic concerns. This sentiment resonated with Officer Liu’s assertion that, in moments of peril, scholastic achievements offered little solace.
The harrowing ordeal shows the complexities of familial dynamics and the significance of safeguarding personal safety, transcending the pressures of academic excellence.
