Nestled within the sprawling Mojave Desert, Barstow is frequently referred to online as a resting place for truckers travelling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The renowned Route 66 runs through Barstow, especially its Mojave stretch, experiencing significant traffic. Many travellers passing through this stretch have shared eerie anecdotes on social media, leading to its moniker as the Bermuda Triangle of cities. Reddit users flocked to the forum to share some downright scary Barstow experiences. One post described a “very creepy” man who approached the user.
The post read, “While we were outside the car, a man with lengthy hair and a beard seemingly materialised out of thin air, and started walking towards us. Without uttering a word, he fixed us with a chilling gaze. I acted swiftly, starting the car just as he neared it. It remains one of the most terrifying and unsettling experiences I’ve ever encountered.” Yet another user cautioned others to never make a stop there at night, admitting that he had heard countless horror stories coming out of this stretch at Barstow.
Travel Ladies, a platform dedicated to assessing destinations based on their safety for female travellers, cautioned its visitors about exercising caution during nighttime. The website emphasised that while many areas are adequately illuminated and monitored by law enforcement, it’s advisable to steer clear of sparsely populated and poorly lit areas to ensure personal safety.
Some more bizarre tales that bordered towards hilarity recounted how the city had a profound effect on dogs. Many users recounted how their pet dogs threw up whenever they drove through route 66.
Despite its mixed reputation, Barstow found a glimmer of positivity when popular YouTuber WonderHussy went on a journey to the desert city and chronicled her experiences there. “Many only encounter Barstow while driving between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, as it serves as a midway point,” she observed. “Is Barstow solely a den of drug activity? I believe that’s somewhat unjust. In my opinion, Barstow offers a decent living environment.”
