Indian folktales often narrate stories of snakes defending the mythical Naagmani or the snake stone, a gem believed to be having magical healing powers. Snake protecting treasures is not limited to Indian culture alone. In many ancient religions, snakes were revered as deities. In ancient times, long before the use of gold, silver, or precious stones, wealth was measured in grain and farm produce. Rodents posed a threat to this wealth by consuming it. Snakes, which helped control the rodent population, were seen as protectors of wealth. A recent video that has been going viral on the internet seems to reaffirm the position of snakes as guardians of treasure.
One Instagram page often shares videos of small scale excavations that lead to discovery of hidden treasure. This time, a video has been shared on that page where some gold coins were seemingly being guarded by a snake. The authenticity of the video has been questioned by many. In the video, two men are seen scavenging through a few rocks. They remove a heap of boulders, one by one, in what seems to be a rocky mountainous terrain. They keep doing it until they find a small pouch buried deep beneath those boulders, tied with a small rope.
You will be in for a surprise as soon as they open the pouch. A live snake crawls out of the pouch, making them step back. The snake however, crawls away and disappears among the rocks. The men then empty the pouch to reveal a few gold coins.
The video has gone viral, but very few people have actually been convinced that the clip is real. Users are convinced that the men hid the gold coins along with the snake in the pouch themselves. One logically pointed out that the gold coins were indeed part of some long forgotten treasure, but the snake would not have been alive inside the pouch for so long.
