Larry Carter Jr, a resident of Florida, US, recently reported that his prized possession, a 2023 limited edition Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak, was stolen from his Winter Haven home. What makes this incident heart wrenching is that the car not only had the name of Carter’s late mother, Lorena Leonard, but he had also kept some of her ashes in the cupholder, who passed away in 2019.
Carter believes that the individual broke the window, pushed the car out of his neighbourhood and started the engine, all while he was sleeping peacefully. In an unexpected turn of events, the day after the car vanished, the Florida man found something hanging out of his mailbox and turns out, it was his mother’s ashes. However, the thief didn’t return the car, but Carter remains hopeful that the person will return his vehicle.
Talking to WFLA, Carter said, “I ain’t hear no horn, nothing. Car didn’t crank. I would have heard it. It was special, you know, its last call. Got my mother’s name. Got Jesus on both sides. It was meant for her (his mother). That’s the main reason I got that car because of her, to represent her. She meant the world. She meant the world, actually her and my dad really. I felt like, when I lost both of them, I feel like I wasn’t nobody. I feel like I ain’t have nobody. They were in my corner. Good thing they did brought it back because that car was special for her. So, without having her ashes, I felt like I’m a failure.”
Larry Carter Jr further explained that he took precautions to preserve the evidence, by ensuring not to leave his fingerprints on the container and closed the lid with his shirt. Meanwhile, Winter Haven police officers surveyed the neighbourhood to gather the evidence earlier this week and they’re yet to catch the culprit. Despite the trouble, Carter remains confident about getting his customized car back and he feels the thief’s actions were misguided, he believes they still have a good heart.
In 2023, a similar incident happened in Florida, when a woman named Daresha Garmon claimed that a car rental company misplaced her mother’s ashes and discarded them. Garmon states that despite giving her the guarantee, the company misled her and ignored her requests. She shared the tragic story of her mother’s death in a parking when Garmon was just seven years old and her mother passed away three days later in the hospital. On her 18th birthday, Garmon’s grandmother gifted her the container containing her mother’s ashes. The woman is now determined to get justice from the car rental company for their dishonesty.
