Videos of fridge restocking can be very satisfying to watch. However, among the genre of restocking videos, there is an underlying issue of overconsumption. Most of the restocking content hinges on using excess products, be it using separate containers for different vegetables, pouring out milk or juices from their original bottles and filling them into more “aesthetic” looking containers, or filling the fridge to the brim with unrealistic but good-looking food. A video that has all these features of overconsumption and misleading use of things is now being criticised on Instagram.
The video, made by a popular lifestyle content creator with 2.7 lakh followers, is about restocking her kid’s fridge. The woman adds line after line of ultra processed food such as flavoured milk, a range of juices, Lunchables, processed meat and four to five different types of full-size whipped cream sprays. At some point, she also puts some loose eggs in a flat compartment of the fridge, where they might break by colliding with each other. Interestingly she also adds some herbs in the fridge that are kept in special containers, reportedly made so to prolong the freshness of the herbs.
This video, captioned, “finally organized the kids’ fridge today.” has over five lakh likes. The influencer also wrote “Comment “fridge” if you want me to send you the links for everything in this video.” This may signal that she is advertising the products used and might earn through affiliate links.
Needless to say, many people took to the comments section to slam the excessiveness and the harmful effect such videos have on parents who might be lured into buying things they don’t need.
An Instagram user commented, “Why would kids need 12 pounds of butter and loose eggs in a drawer? Why are you lying to Instagram?”
Someone else wrote, “They most definitely got an extra fridge or just doing this for likes with the other groceries sitting on the counter waiting to be put up after the video.”
Another person cautioned, “Dear moms, and soon to be moms: This is NOT the creator’s real life, and it will never be your life, because it’s NOT REAL. You don’t want or need to spend hundreds of dollars on plastic bins for your “kids” fridge. Expensive, individually packaged food. These types of creators are harming not only the environment with their wastefulness, they are harming moms and soon to be moms by making them believe that you need to live this lifestyle to be a “good mom” or “for your children to love you”. Keep making those PB&J sandwiches for lunch, or just send them with lunch money.”
