It is true that people are influenced by the movies they watch over time, but many believe that films are in themselves inspired by real life and their surroundings. It turns out, those people are right. Recently, a woman revealed on Instagram that the premise of Mani Ratnam’s film Alaipayuthey, which stars R Madhavan and Shalini, is based on her parents’ love story. She even tagged the actor in the post. What’s more interesting to note is that R. Madhavan reacted to it.
A user, Sanjana Nagesh, took to her IG handle and narrated how she was introduced to her parents’ love story. She shared a reel with some of her parents’ pictures together and wrote, “So, one day i went to my mom and asked her how she met appa and that i want to listen about their love story. Mom – do you have some time? Me – yeah sure why? Mom asked for a laptop and asked me to watch ALAIPAYUTHEY. Me, all irritated, said “please ma im old enough to know my parents love story.” Mom said finish the movie and call me…..Few hours later, I finished the movie and called her and little did i know what she’d say…YOU JUST WATCHED MY LOVE STORY. It’s our story even before it was theirs. Sanj cried…” The user also noted that it is an amazing and adventurous story.

Sanjana further mentioned that a few of her father’s friends saw the film for the first time, and the first thing they did was call her father and ask, “How did Mani Ratnam steal your love story?” After that, her parents watched the film multiple times in the theatre. The embedded text on the post read, “Hey Madhavan. If this has reached you, I want you to know that Alaipayuthey was my parents’ love story from 1994, even before it was yours in 2000.”
R Madhavan took notice of the post and replied, expressing his happiness. He wrote, “Wow, perfect, I’m sure; it has to be a way more romantic story.”
Others were also stunned to learn about the resemblance and asked for more details. One user said, “After seeing this reel I literally went and watched that movie, really it’s an awesome love story of your parents,” while another person commented, “Aww it must have been such a beautiful story and still is.”
