Mumbai School Principal Allegedly Asked to Resign Over Posts on Hamas-Israel Conflict: Report
Shaikh, who has been working at the Somaiya School in Vidyavihar for 12 years refused to resign. She was appointed principal of the school seven years ago

Parveen Shaikh, the principal of the Somaiya School, Mumbai has been asked to resign by the school management allegedly over her posts on the Hamas-Israel conflict on microblogging site X, reported Indian Express. However, Shaikh, who has been associated with the school in Vidyavihar for 12 years refused to resign. She was appointed principal seven years ago.

Shaikh was allegedly pressured by the school management authorities to resign, the report added. “I live in democratic India; I hold the principle of freedom of speech in high regard as it is a cornerstone of democracy. It is unimaginable that my expression would provoke such a malicious response, furthering their biased agenda,” she said further adding that she will not resign as she has given her 100 per cent to the school.

Shaikh also added that in a meeting held in March, it was clearly stated that employees of the school can express their opinions on their private social media accounts only if they clearly state that these are personal opinions, the news agency said.

Earlier, a report was published on OpIndia stating Shaikh’s comments on her social media handle were pro-Palestine. The principal however said she was unaware of the report until she was informed by the school management about it. She also added that she was not contacted by the publication before.

A spokesperson for the Somaiya Trust said that they are looking into the matter.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has introduced a dress code for school teachers in the state, disallowing them to wear t-shirts, jeans, or any other shirt having designs and pictures, reported PTI. The teachers can now use the prefix Tr before their names. The state has asked schools to decide the dress code for their respective male and female teachers. The move will apply to all the schools, including private, aided, and non-aided, in the state.
