THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In response to the call made by Vilappilsala Janakeeya Samithi to prohibit the entry of waste-laden Corporation lorries to the Vilappil panchayat from December 21 onwards, Mayor K Chandrika has urged the agitators to have a relook into the issue and sought the State Government’s assistance in ensuring the security of the Corporation staff engaged in the movement of waste. Addressing the media here on Thursday, the Mayor said that the Vilappilsala issue cannot be tackled in a day. The quantity of waste from the city should be brought down gradually. In order to decrease the amount of waste produced, source-level treatment has to be strengthened. ”The agitators should understand the gravity of the issue and take decisions sensibly,” she said. In a bid to convey her concern over the issue, she said that source-level waste management was structured to plug the increase in waste-generation among the urban population. The campaign to create awareness on the treatment of waste at source will be intensified. This is a process that requires the participation of Vilappilsala protestors too. ”The Vilappilsala population should understand that it is not a battle between the Corporation and the panchayat,” she said. Chandrika even said that the Vilappilsala protests have now been deserted by all the political parties and the panchayat, and the ongoing agitation is being controlled by ‘some others’. The Mayor, meanwhile, announced that a Pyrolysis plant would be set up once ample land is made available in any of the panchayats that were attached to the Corporation. Once it becomes operational, the waste treatment will become more effective. The Pyrolysis plant is expected to check the menace of waste treatment as it uses sophisticated technology to treat the waste and convert it to harmless residue. When asked about the role of the Corporation in resolving the stalemate, Chandrika said that the Corporation has nothing to offer and the onus of providing security lies with the State Government. ”They should provide security to the Corporation employees. The Chief Minister should intervene and hold talks with the striking leaders. We have already written a letter to him,” she said. Award for BSUPThiruvananthapuram Corporation has received laurels from the Central Government for its effective implementation of Basic Services for Urban Poor Scheme (BSUP), the Mayor informed. The award was received by a team led by the Mayor at a function held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on December 13, in the presence of the Prime Minister. BSUP, an ambitious project of the Central Government, was launched in the city after it received the Central Government’s nod in 2007. The project is meant to improve the infrastructure of the slums by constructing houses and providing other civic amenities, including library, community hall and ‘anganvadi.’
