Bhopal: A saint in a Madhya Pradesh village killed himself by immolation on Wednesday.
Though the villagers and his followers think it to be a big sacrifice for human welfare, police considers it a suicide.
“The baba had said he would attain ‘Samadhi’ today (Wednesday) and when we went for milk early morning he sat on his cot and within minutes he was in flames. He was a saint,” says a villager and an eyewitness Kartar Singh Gurjar.
The saint had reportedly made his intentions public five days ago but his followers did nothing than sitting and watching the bizarre act of faith.
“Senior police officials and forensic science experts have reached the spot. Why did baba take the ‘Samadhi’ can only be concluded after the investigation,” says Bhopal Home Minister, Jagdish Dewra.
This act of the saint has given way to a debate in the village. The district administration is not able to decide if actions should be taken against the policemen who witnessed the act and did nothing or should bow to the villagers’ demand of building a temple for the saint.
