THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Raising the hope of initiating serious efforts in solid waste management in the city, Shashi Tharoor MP here on Monday announced that he had requested Union Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath to immediately intervene and release funds for the purpose. Listing the slew of development projects initiated and implemented in his constituency during the first half of his tenure as Member of the Parliament, Tharoor said that in August 2011, an amount of Rs 2.94 crore was released as Additional Central Assistance under the JNNURM. He said the amount would be utilised for the state project for solid waste management with a total estimated cost of Rs 24.56 crore. He said 80 per cent of the cost will be borne by the Centre. The total Central share will come to Rs 19.64 crore. He said the balance amount will also be released in due course. However, Tharoor said that he did not know what the City Corporation had done with the already released amount of Rs 2.94 crore.Geriatric Clinic for MCH: Tharoor said Central assistance worth Rs 2 crore had already been released for the geriatric clinic in the Medical College Hospital here. He also said that an integrated transport facility comprising air, surface and water transport facilities would come up at Kovalam.‘Corp lacked initiative’Referring to the current crisis in the city, Shashi Tharoor said that he did not want to politicise the issue. However, he said that he had anticipated the crisis following the lack of initiative on the part of the City Corporation over his proposals to have a waste disposal project under the Barcelona twin city project.He pointed out that Barcelona city corporation had been consulted and their cooperation was sought in setting up a waste disposal plant here based on their expertise and tested technology.The Barcelona city corporation had set up a huge plant to treat waste as an underground project right under the Olympic stadium. Tharoor said that Thiruvananthapuram city also could have used the experience of Barcelona. But, there was no chance for reviving that proposal, he added.However, he said that he would explore the possibilities for other international ventures in this direction.
