Ashish Kumar created history by bagging India's first-ever CWG medal in gymnastics, a bronze.

New Delhi: Ashish Kumar created history by bagging the first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in gymnastics, a bronze, for India here on Thursday.

The 19-year-old from Allahabad scored 14.475 in the floor exercise final. Australia's Thomas Pichler won gold with a score of 14.675 while Englishman Reiss Beckford claimed silver notching up 14.625 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.

"I was nervous performing in the final. I am glad to win the first medal for India and I am sure there will be more in future," Ashish said.

Indian coach Vladimir Chertkhov said he was confident India will break the medal jinx in gymnastics this time around. "During the World Championships, I had said Indian gymnastics were on rise. Ashish proved me right today," Chertkhov said.

Dipa Karmakar, competing in the women's vault final, finished seventh with a score of 12.687. England's Imogen Cairns, Jennifer Khwela of South Africa and Gabby May of Canada claimed the top three positions.
