KADAPA: With the monsoon playing truant with farmers, drought like situation prevailed in the district and the ryots have kept their finger crossed.Despite dark clouds hovering on the horizon for the past two months, many areas in the district yet to get the feel of regular monsoon except a few few spell of occasional shower.According to Met department officials, the district has not even received the 50 per cent of the average rainfall in the last two months.  The district had received only 71.7 mm of rainfall in June and July against the average of 166 mm. Out of the 50 mandals in the district, about 35 received a scanty rainfall and the remaining 15 mandals including Chakarayapeta, LR Palle, Tsundupalle, Chinnamandem, VN Palle, Obulavaripalle, Ramapuram, Galiveedu, Vempalle, and others saw less rainfalls by 67 to 91 per cent than the average, they said.Average crop acreage was severely affected by the scanty rainfall, which was decreased by about five per cent than the average. In all, the average kharif crop acreage of the district stands at 2.55 lakh hectares.  With no rains, farmers especially the oilseed growers, who had kept seeds and fertilisers ready expecting a good monsoon, were forced to sell the seeds to oil mills, suffering 30-40 percent losses. It may be noted that AP Rytu Sangham had demanded that Kadapa be declared a drought-affected district and farmers given immediate financial assistance
