HYDERABAD: The first-time MLAs of the Congress are preparing to tour the length and breadth of the state carrying the message to people that the Kiran Kumar Reddy government is doing its best to protect their interests and provide a better, efficient and transparent administration. All of them want to travel in one group in two buses and address public meetings in villages and towns extolling the virtues of the chief minister and Congress’ commitment to people’s welfare.According to sources, the bus yatra is some sort of an image makeover that the chief minister is interested in doing as the state inches slowly towards 2014 when the general election is due.Of the 156 Congress MLAs, about 70 are first timers. At present they are seeking the cooperation of ministers from each district so that their tour becomes a success. After obtaining clearance from the party high command, they will undertake the bus yatra. “The dates have not been finalised but we want to undertake the yatra as early as possible,” one MLA who discussed the yatra with revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy said. But there is a lurking fear among them over how people will receive them in villages. One woman MLA wants to know whether the MLAs are expecting a red carpet welcome. It will be a miracle if there are no hostile crowds because there is practically no development work taking place. “In the last three years, I, for myself, have not laid the foundation stone for a single project nor inaugurated one. Why should people be happy?” she wondered.
