There are a number of colleges that are mushrooming, but all of them are producing unemployable graduates,” said Nirmala Prasad, principal, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, at the launch of the book Out of Syllabus. “The students are clueless about why they’re not getting a job,” she added.
A training programme for both teachers and students based on the book Out of Syllabus, authored by V Rajesh, was launched by Training Sideways, which uses the soft skills technique of training combined with arts-based methodologies.
Taking the main objective of the book – to bridge the gap between college education and finding a job – Training Sideways has developed an interactive and theatre-based training programme based on the contents of the book. The ability of students to convert data into knowledge, understanding applicability, being aware of where one must invent time and energy are some of the topics covered in the book.
Sunil Vishnu, director, Training Sideways, said that the programme would follow an experiential method of training. “There are a lot of tips in the book that will be very useful for students. So we decided to convert the book into a workshop. When you actually do things, the learning is much faster,” he explained.
“You tend to know about life skills as part of growing up, but there is never a conscious thought about them in your mind,” said Rajesh in a previous interview with City Express about his book. “All that you study is not going to help you in your career, because (without life skills), you can’t take a concept and apply it. A lot of little things in the book teach one to cross the bridge from the theory and concept side to practical and career side.”
A 30-minute workshop was conducted for teachers. “This is just a small part of a full-length workshop that will soon be launched for the students in the college,” said Vishnu.
