The move is an attempt to dilute the military character of Indian presence and gradually normalise perceptions.

New Delhi: Ahead of the Indo-Pak Foreign Secretary talks, plans are afoot to open up Siachen Glacier – the world's highest battlefield – to mountaineering expeditions from all over the world.

The plan includes setting up a mountaineering base at Siachen to promote adventure tourism.

Siachen Pioneer Colonel N Kumar says, “There is no shelling no firing. We should allow freely so that awareness will also come that Siachen is with India and you can go and climb there."

Siachen has been heavily militarised since 1984 when the Indian Army moved in to pre-empt a Pakistani move to occupy the commanding heights.

Observers view the latest move as an attempt to dilute the military character of the Indian presence and gradually normalise perceptions about Siachen.
