THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: True, private schools are all over the place - with spoken English, trimmed uniforms and to-and-fro bus services. But government schools have not lost their spirit. Even against heavy odds, they are putting all energy into giving that ‘new’ look to schools. Hoping that flashy paints on the walls would catch some eyes. But sadly, the ones with no paints have no hopes too. Ever since the success reaped by Manacaud TTI after switching over to bright colours and child-friendly looks, the trend has caught on. But the big question remains, whether paints are all that matter. Two years ago, many government schools had sported this board - ‘Starting English divisions.’ Before that, it was the promise to send school bus to the doorstep of the student. Last year, following the success of the Manacaud TTI after switching over to bright colours, the trend set in. This year, it just continues. ‘’No, it is not paint alone. We have taken steps to provide sports and arts teachers in all schools under the teachers’ bank. The interview to the posts was held last week. Also, this time, we hope to start the ‘Noorumeni’ project to improve results in class X from the first term itself,’’ said Deputy Mayor G Happykumar. The development of a school is often the result of the interest shown by the school authorities and the councillor of the area. Active intervention has saved many a school from closing down. But sometimes only the fittest survive. ‘’There may be many deserving schools, but some schools grab more money,’’ said a councillor. The Corporation’s Education Standing Committee chairperson K S Sheela said that those schools which had submitted proposals were considered and money for infrastructure development granted. ‘’The work is getting over in many schools. We have tried to help all schools which needed help with infrastructure,’’ she said. Sadly, caught in the election brouhaha, the Corporation has no special plans to welcome the little ones or the first-timers to school. Though the Corporation-level ‘praveshanotsav’ would be held at Manacaud TTI, probably for all its fame, no further thoughts have been invested into making the academic year any special. The District Panchayat is also gearing up with its plans to upgrade schools into model ones. In two years, all schools under the District Panchayat would sport a bright blue and some of them already do.
